The Basic Rights of a Relationship

  • The right to goodwill from the other
  • The right to emotional support
  • The right to be heard & responded to with courtesy
  • The right to have your own view, even if it differs from the other.
  • The right to have your feelings & experiences acknowledged as real
  • The right to receive a sincere apology for any jokes you find offensive
  • The right to live free from accusation and blame
  • The right to live free from criticism & judgement
  • The right to have your work and interests spoken of with respect
  • The right to encouragement
  • The right to live free of emotional & physical threat
  • The right to live free from angry outbursts & rage
  • The right to be called no name that devalues you
  • The right to be respectfully asked, rather than ordered
  • The right to give & receive love & affection both emotionally & physically

That being said, the best advice I was ever given in regards to relationships was from my maid of honour’s Mom:

“Always treat your significant other with the same respect you would give to a complete stranger.”
