This time of year is a
mix of emotion.
A reminder of how briefly
we have each other. I am in awe
As the green of the trees age
into a brilliance of orange –
Still holding the beauty of youth.
Slowly crumbling away to
reveal each limb – baring the
skeletal soul of the forest.

Like a parent, the maples
give their leaves to the earth –
A sacrifice to nurture new life.
And like any child,
I naively believe
I can keep those leaves forever,
pressed between two books;
One book to teach me love,
the other to learn how to live.

The tears flood my being with grief
as the autumn rain washes away the
brittle, dry remains
And one by one, my books
have departed.
